Abstract

Purpose: The study aimed to examine relationships between selected factors of social support from family, perceived severity of symptoms, perceived severity of cancer, perceived benefit of treatment, beliefs about the necessity of medication, beliefs about the need to take medication and medication adherence in cancer patients receiving oral anticancer agents.
Design: Descriptive correlational research.
Methods: The subjects were 121 outpatients with cancer who received oral anticancer agents in 3 tertiary hospitals. Multistage sampling was used. Eight questionnaires were used to measure the following: 1) personal and illness data, 2) social support from family scale, 3) perceived severity of symptoms scale, 4) perceived severity of cancer scale, 5) perceived benefit of treatment scale, 6) beliefs about the need to take medication scale 7) beliefs about the concern in taking medication and 8) the medication adherence scale. All questionnaires had content validity. Their Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the 2nd to 8th instruments were .94, .92, .89, .89, .89, .77 and .82, respectively. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s product moment correlation. Findings: The mean of medication adherence in cancer patients receiving oral anticancer agents was high (gif.latex?\bar{X} = 4.50, SD=0.36). Social support from family and beliefs about the necessity of medication were positively related while beliefs about the specific medication were negatively related to medication adherence in cancer patients (r = .40, p < .05; r = .24, p < .05 and r = -.24, p < .05, respectively).
