Abstract

Abstract

A market, or Talad in Thai, is a location where people exchange local products for daily use and consumption. The market can reflect the economic and commercial conditions, including the urban growth together with social and cultural characteristics of each community. This research aimed to study the origin and development of the markets in Ubon Ratchathani province. The case studies of three markets in the Ubon Ratchathani Municipality area are :  Municipal Market 3 (Talad Yai), Municipal Market 2 (Talad Noi), and a private market called Tayaprasat Market (Talad Ban Du). This research used the framework of economic history.

The results revealed that the three markets in the Ubon Ratchathani Municipality area have differently developed in the context of economic change at the local, provincial, national and global levels. This reflects the transformation of the local community structure into the urban structure, particularly from the factors of railway construction, road construction, the context of World War II, Vietnam War, the arrival of American military based in Ubon Ratchathani, and changes of local administration
