Abstract

Abstract
Objectives: To determine the prevalence and associated factors of depression among the nurses of Srinagarind Hospital.
Materials and Methods: This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The research instrument was self-completing questionnaires which had 2 parts. The first part asked about demographic data, medical illness, mental health, satisfaction in family relationship, and working situation. The second part was KKU-DI (Khon Kaen University Depression Inventory) which was the screening questionnaire for depression. Participants were the nurses who were working in Srinagarind Hospital in the year 2006. Period of study was during 1 April- 31 July 2006. Statistical method was percentage, prevalence, mean, standard deviation, odds ratios, χ2 test and multiple logistic regressions.
Results: The questionnaires were sent out to the whole number of nurses (623 nurses). Six hundreds and six nurses (97.3%) replied and sent the questionnaires back. The prevalence of depression among the nurses of Srinagarind Hospital according to KKU-DI was 33.3%. Factors associated with depression were age younger than 35 years old, economic status, presence of traumatic event in the previous year, history of suicidal attempt, satisfaction in family relationship, moral, compensation, feeling of being
controlled, problem with patients and their relatives, inefficiency in workplace management, and lacking of human resource.
Conclusion: The prevalence of depression in the nurses of Srinagarind Hospital was higher than general population. This might be due to over workload, lack of moral support, dissatisfaction in
compensation, feeling of being over controlled, problem from patients and their relatives, inefficiency in work managing system and lacking of human resource.
