Abstract

The article reviews literature on transnational marriage, migration, and  transnational intimacy, particularly those on Thai society since the 2000’s, with comparative discussion with other Asian countries. The review shows that key analytical frameworks has shifted from assimilation to international migration which focuses on the adaptation of migrants in host countries. Transnationalism then offers insights on ties between migrants and families, and transformation in their home countries. More recently are studies that conceptualize these marital relationships in relation to citizenship, especially on legal citizenship in the host countries. These diverse frameworks have situated transnational marriage and migration in broader social contexts, and illustrated both strengths and limits of the current state of knowledge. In particular, this review addresses the need for further research in key understudied issues including masculinity, transnational care labor and citizenship.
