Abstract

Abstract

Architectural Conservation claims scientific rational-process as its approach towards built environment today. This essay questions the discrepancies of conservation practices that derived from the same rational process. With the same logic and goal, evaluations of the same type of historic buildings in different culture resulted in opposite conservation practices. It would appear that the rational conservation-processes were governed by different assumption.

This essay belief that the “assumption” influences evaluation process and decisions on the future of the buildings. Clarification of assumption assists comprehension of the “scientific-rational conservation-process.” Assumption is a deep belief; that governs perception of an individual’s environment; that is immutable or changeable with great difficulty.

Conservation Assumption, as observed are “Building as Memorials” : and approach that treat building as symbol of perfection and sacred religion thereby aims to preserve perfection of the place. “Old Way of Life and Wisdom” : a romantic approach that responds to emotional attach to the glorious past, aiming at continuation of old tradition and image. “Historical Consciousness” : and approach that treat buildings as historical evidence thereby a historical stream of civilization may be completed. It it’s a main conservation assumption of ICOMOS UNESCO.
