ABSTRACT

The present dissertation analyses the discourse of ‘white-ness’ as it emerges in contemporary popular women’s culture as represented by a group of women in Vientiane. As regards data collection, the dissertation is a documentary study conducted on the basis of deep field interviews with a small mixed sub-group representative of urban and rural women in Vientiane. The theoretical framework adopted is that of discourse theory. The research focus is on the process of building the aesthetic and socio-anthropological construct of ‘white-ness’. This construct is related to the use of power, knowledge and truth. These appear indeed to be the three key areas involved in the representation of ‘white-ness’ – the interplay of power, knowledge and truth is instrumental as an agent of meaning that gives white-ness its positioning in society. That is, power builds the social meaning of white-ness. The changing attitude and responses to beauty displayed by the group of women under study shows a polarisation towards the notion and ideology of ‘white-ness’ as these are represented in popular culture, and in turn it feeds back onto an ongoing reference to traditional notions.

The discourse of ‘white-ness’ is already present in traditional Lao women’s culture, which provides a knowledge basis or repository of meaning and contents that are expressed in literature, poetry, story-telling and romantic sagas. Traditional literary clichés provide the symbols and points of references whereby women build the meaning and elaborate a shared notion of beauty in Vientiane. With Vientiane developing as a modern country in the globalised era, ‘white-ness’ has continued to be a productive notion of self-representation and further reproduces itself through the medias. The ideal as it has been negotiated through the medias’ projection has become the inherited notion of women’s beauty in Vientiane. Television in particular has been the determining factor in leading to the acceptance of this notion of ‘white-ness’ as beauty as an established social value. Although the group analysed is strongly influenced by the beauty norm popularised as it has been described, it continues to look at the traditional discourse as an implicit point of ideological reference and legitimation. Further, they express an awareness of the need to protect and embody the traditional ideal as it has been culturally inherited. This awareness and preoccupation has a dimension of social morality and ethics in that it is concerned with the preservation of and adherence to the traditional canon of beauty in society. There is continuity with the traditional belief system centered on the idea that the source of beauty is within and that external beauty embodies inner beauty and purity.
