The English Vocabulary game on Android Smartphone for Moderate Mental Retardation Children

Abstract

This study aims to develop an English Vocabulary game on Android Smartphone for moderate
mental retardation children. The aim also includes evaluative study with children’s memory skill after using
English Vocabulary game. The samples are 20 students from Kalasin Punyanukul School, who are moderate
mental retardation children. The chosen samples do not have multiple disabilities condition and are able to Android Smartphone for children with moderate mental retardation developed by the researcher. 2) A
quality evaluation form for the game assessed by 5 experts. 3) A paper memory-test to measure
memorizing skill before and after the game played, containing 5 categories (color, fruit, animal, and clothes)
with 50 words in total. 4) A behavior observation form describing how the samples reacted when playing
the game. The statistics used in this study are arithmetic means and standard deviation. The result shows as
the followings. 1) The experts rated the quality of English Vocabulary game on Android Smartphone for
moderate mental retardation children as a very good level 2) The paper test resulted in the score increases
for all 5 categories has the higher the level of statistical significance of <.05.When ranked, the color category
showed the highest improvement, changing from a poor level to a satisfying level. The second highest was
the fruit category. The third highest was the animal category. The fourth was the clothes category. And, the
fifth was the number category. 3) the learning behavior of the moderate mental retardation children group
while playing the game were considered a good level. Meanwhile, some showed an excellent behavior
level, meaning they were able to finish the game by going through all of the categories.
