Abstract

Stroke is a disease of the nervous system caused by disorders of the cerebral blood vessels, which often are found in the elderly. Stroke survivors may have disabilities which limit their activities of daily living (ADL) and create a burden on caregivers. Therefore, caregivers need to be prepared, so that they can provide more efficient care. This quasi experimental study aimed to compare the preparedness and the burden among caregivers of older persons with stroke between a coached and non-coached group. The subjects were 52 caregivers of older persons with stroke living in Chiang Mai. The subjects were equally divided and randomly assigned into an experimental group and a control group, 26 in each group. The experimental group participated in a 12- week coaching program run by researchers and the control group received the usual care from the health team. Research instruments consisted of 1) the Coaching Program for Caregivers of older persons with stroke 2) Educational handbook for caregivers of older persons with stroke 3) Health profile notebook of older persons with stroke and 4) Stroke rehabilitation for older person video. 1.  Preparedness and Burden among caregivers of older persons with stroke were at a moderate level.
  2.  Preparedness among caregivers of older persons with stroke of the coached group was statistically significant higher than the non- coached group. (p < .001)
  3.  The burden among caregivers of older persons with stroke of the coached group was statistically significant less than the non- coached group. (p < .001)
  4.  Preparedness among caregivers of older persons with stroke was significantly higher after coaching than before coaching. (p < .001)
  5.  Burden among caregivers of older persons with stroke, after coaching was significantly less than before coaching. (p < .001)
