Abstract

It is generally accepted that vocabulary is one of the important components in effectivelylearning a foreign language. A question frequently asked is what vocabulary should be taught andwhich criteria should be considered. This article presents the objectives of vocabulary teaching andlearning in terms of: what native-speaking language students know about vocabulary, how many newwords English-as-a-foreign-language (EFL) students should learn at a time, how much time studentstake to remember a word, and vocabulary learning approaches. Some criteria for vocabulary selectionare given, followed by the related research on vocabulary pedagogy development as used in theclassroom in the Thai context.
