Abstract

This research aimed to compare the ellipsis in Japanese and English headlines through 100 online news headlines divided into 50 Japanese headlines from 3 online newspapers; Yomiuri, Asahi, and Mainichi from September 26-30, 2018, and 50 English headlines from 2 online newspapers; The Nation and Bangkok Post from June 8-12, 2018. The results revealed that types of the ellipsis in Japanese are more various than those in English. The key difference between two languages is that in Japanese online news headlines, main verbs can be omitted from predicates because other constituents are hints for guessing sentence meanings while this has never happened in English online news headlines. In English, auxiliary verbs, verb be, and verbs in the present tense are the main points for ellipsis.
