Abstract

This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of Stroke Special Nursing Training Program using Kirkpatrick’s Model approach 4 levels: reaction, learning, behavioral change and results of organization. The mixed method design was used and divided into 2 phases.  Phase1: quantitative study of reaction and learning evaluation of 32 nursing students of special nursing training course of Stroke nursing. Data were collected using satisfaction questionnaire and pre-posttest of Stroke knowledge.  Phase 2: quantitative and qualitative studies for evaluation of the trainees’ behavioral change and results of organization. The participants were 32 trainees of special nursing training, 32 nursing administrators, 22 nurse instructors and mentors. Data were collected using trainees’ behavior change, and semi-structured interview of results evaluation. Data analyzed using descriptive statistic, paired t-test and content analysis.

The results indicated that the phase I: the stroke special nursing trainees evaluated training program reaction through overall satisfaction as a very good category. Their learning ability was improved significantly after participating in the program (p<0.001) and they could pass both theory and practice examinations at 100%. In phase II: The researchers followed behavioral change evaluated by their administrators after six months.  The trainees’ behavioral changed showed improved significantly after finishing the program (p < 0.001). The participants evaluated positive results to their organization. The trainees could apply knowledge, attitude and skill to improve themselves and sharing knowledge with colleagues. They could also develop the networks of Stroke care, and improve better quality of care for patients with Stroke.

The study provided the evidence based knowledge and valuable recommendation to create standard and quality of special nursing course of Stroke nursing training that relate to needs of trainees and organizations in the future.
