Abstract

This descriptive research aims to investigate the need of registered nurses in Bangkok to further their study in the field of nursing. The sampling
group, which consisted of registered nurses working in 39 public and private hospitals, was selected through stratified random samplings in proportion to the population. The questionnaires (IOC = 0.75-1.00, Cronbach’s alpha coefficients = .79) were mailed out to 1,200 eligible subjects, 709 of which (59%) returned the completed questionnaires. The data were analyzed using frequency count
and percentage. The findings are as follows:

1. Twenty-five percent of the respondents said they wished to study fortheir Master’s degree in adult and gerontological nursing. In terms of programorganization, most of them (61.6%) preferred Plan A, which involves completinga Master’s thesis during the course of their study. 52.6% stated that classesshould be on weekends during normal working hours, while 72.5% preferred acontinuing program of study, with Thai as the language of instruction (64.9%). Asregards the reasons to further their study, 85.5% of the respondents stated that they wanted to enhance their knowledge and experience, while 54.7% noted that the study would help raise their own educational level. As for the motivation behind the selection of a particular institution, 92.9% cited the popularity of the nursing program and perceived benefits to their current job, and 58.5% the
ease of commute. In terms of support from their agency, most agencies provide funding for the study (50.8%), and 79.3% are likely to allow leave of absence with pay. Upon the completion of their study, the respondents hoped to acquire competence in advanced nursing practice (79.4%), research and application of research findings (78.7%), and counseling (67.8%).

2. Most of the registered nurses surveyed wished to attend a specialized training in the field of nurse practitioner (31.5%), followed by gerontological nursing (29.6%). In terms of program organization, the majority of the respondents expressed their preference for a 16-to-18 week course (94.1%) during the weekdays (54.7%) and in the form of continuing education (81.5%), with Thai as the medium of instruction (59.1%). The reasons for attending such a course are to enhance their knowledge and experience (80.8%) and to support the advancement of
their career (63.0%). 58.1% of the respondents noted that their agency would provide funding. Upon the completion of their study, the respondents hoped to gain competence in advanced nursing practice (84.2%),

The findings from this study were useful for the development of 2 new curricula: Master of Nursing Science in Adult and Gerontological Nursing,
and Program of Nursing Specialty in Gerontological Nurse Practitioner. These programs aim to enhance competences in registered nurses and prepare themto deal with healthcare problems in urbanized areas. This will ultimately lead to the achievement of sustainable development goals for professional nurses and the nursing profession, as well as a higher quality of life for adults and senior
citizens in Bangkok.
