Families Relationship in Self-Care Promotion for Uncontrolling Blood Sugar in Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract

The qualitative research aimed to study the diabetes patients’ family relationship and affected to their self-care. The sample was purposely selected from the uncontrolled diabetes patients, HbA1c higher than 7%, 19 families. The research questionnaire and in-depth interview, were content validated by 2 special experts and were tried out with 5 diabetes patients. The data were content analyzed. The research found the relationship affected to the patients’ blood sugar control seen in these main topics 1. Diabetic patients who help themselves, caregivers will give instrumental support as usual; 1) the caregivers gave less strictness in patients’ blood sugar control, 2) the patients were taken care
when they didn’t do anything. 3) marriage couple was the main source of social support. 2. The emotional support by the family members staying with love, caring, involving in daily activities among the descendants with grateful minds were necessary. 3. The patients in families with lower education and economic status were left to stay alone and family members will live separately when the patients had less decision power. The research suggested to the health personnel should provide training to the care givers in sugar blood control for enhancing their abilities in good taking care which can reduce any complications.
