Competencies for Professional Nurses in Long Term Care Institution for The Elderly People

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the competencies for professional nurses in long-term care institution. The Delphi technique was used as the research method. Eighteen experts agreed to participate in this research, consisting of 3 administrative nurses in both public and private nursing homes, 8 registered nurses working in both public nursing homes, 6 nursing instructors specialized in Elderly Nursing and one geriatric medicine. Research instruments were developed by researcher composed of semi-opened ended questionnaires and the five rating scale questionnaires. The data was analyzed by median and interquartile range. Research findings showed that nursing core competency of the nurses
in long-term care institution can be classified into 7 domains as follow; 1) Competency in accepting of aging people 7 items. 2) Competency in nursing care for elderly care in long-term care institution. 3) Competency in communication. 4) Competency in environmental management. 5) Competency in leadership and organization management. 6) Competency in financial management and 7) Competency
in studying and exploring new ideas.
