Abstract

The objective of this randomized controlled trial with double blinds research was to determine the effects of sucrose different concentrations on pain responses to venipuncture in neonates. 120 neonates with inclusion criteria: 1)gestational ages of 34-42 weeks; 2)birth weights 2,500-4,000 grams; 3)postnatal ages 48-72 hours; and undergoing venipuncture participated in this study. All subjects were assigned randomly into four groups of 30 neonates. Pain scores were assessed, using the Neonatal Infant Pain Scale(NIPS). Physiological changes assessed, using a pulse oximeter and video recording. Data was analyzed, using descriptive statistics and ANCOVA. The findings were as follows: 1. The neonates received 12% sucrose group and 24% sucrose group had lower pain scores than the neonates received sterile water group and the neonates received routine care group (p<.05). 2. The neonates received 12% sucrose group and 24% sucrose group had lower change in heart rates comparing with their baseline data at one and three minutes after venipuncture than the neonates receiving sterile water and routine care group (p<.05). However, there was no statistical significant difference (p>0.05) in heart rate of the neonates in four groups at five minutes after venipuncture. 3. There was no statistical significant difference (p>0.05) in O2saturation of the neonates in the four groups at one, three and five minutes after venipuncture.
