Abstract

This evaluation research aimed to develop nurses’ competency on screening and helping women who had experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Seventeen registered nurses attended a 2-day trainingworkshop on IPV screening, warning signs, and counseling techniques for abused women. After the training the nurses were expected to apply knowledge in the care of abused women, and to screen women for abuse by using the Abuse Indicators, and the IPV Interview form. All participated nurses’ evaluated on their knowledge and attitudes toward the care of abused women before and after the training, and a 3-month follow up was conducted. Results showed that all 17 nurses had a statistically significant increase in knowledge (t = -2.46, P < 0.05) and attitudes (t= -3.37, P < 0.01) toward the care of abuse women. After 3 months, 3 participants practice on screening and helping process, 3 participants used counseling, 11 participants did not screen but they thought it is necessary as their routine care still be the first priority to do.
