Attitudes and Experiences of the Users of Medicine Bottle Holder Made of Rubber Foam for Reducing the Incidence of Needle Accidents in Songklanagarind Hospital

Abstract

This mixed methods research study aimed to investigate attitudes and experiences of the users of
safety device made from natural rubber foam for reducing accidental incidence in Songklanagarind Hospital.
The subject were 43 registered nurses and assistant nurses who used safety device made from natural rubber
foam of Songklanagarind Hospital. The study consisted of two approaches of quantitative and qualitative
research. Instrument in this study included 1) questionnaires on attitudes and experiences in using safety device
made from natural rubber foam and 2) interviews and free writing about experiences in using safety device
made from natural rubber foam. Data were analized through the use of descriptive statistics and presented in
frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation. Qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis.
The validity of quantitative tools was verified by checking the content validity and quality by triangulation.
The research found that the overall attitude and satisfaction derived from the experience in using
safety device made from natural rubber foam was at the high level (M= 3.93). In qualitative research from
the 11 respondents, the samples had the attitudes and experiences of the users of medicine bottle holder
made of rubber foam which were divided into 3 categories 1) The device has an unfamiliar appearance. But
it works 2) The device assists in creating safety in working. 3) The device assists in increasing efficiency
in working. The results of the qualitative research supported the quantitative data in terms of users’ positive
attitude and impression in using the device that brought about safety, confidence, and reduction of risks
on accidentally pricking incidence. The subject felt proud that an innovation was introduced by creativity
leading to the change in work behavior in terms of work effectiveness, rapidity of work, quality of life in
work and good hygiene It is suggested that in the future, the development or production of innovations in
prevention of accidents in practice should be encouraged continuously in order to create a culture of safety
in the organization.
