Abstract

This descriptive research aimed to compare work values and organizational commitment among three generations of nursing instructors and support staff, and to examine the correlation between work values and organizational commitment. The samples consisted of 56 nursing instructors and 67 support staff working at Phrapokklao Nursing College, Chanthaburi. The research instrument was a questionnaire that comprised demographic data, work values with the reliabilityof .87, and organizational commitment with the reliability of .92. Data were collected from September to October, 2016. Statistics used for data analysis included frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, independent t-test, Pearson’s product moment correlation, and one-way ANOVA with multiple comparisons by Scheffé.

The research results revealed that 1) the overall mean scores of work values and organizational commitment among nursing instructors and support staff were at a high level; 2) for work values component, the mean scores among three generations of nursing instructors and of support staff were not statistically significant different; regarding organizational commitment component, the mean scores among three generations of nursing instructors were statistically significant different (F = 4.669, p < .05)—baby boomer had higher organizational commitment than the Y-generation; however, there was no statistically significant difference among three generations of support staff; 3) for work values component, the mean scores in each generation between nursing instructors and support staff were not statistically significant different; regarding organizational commitment component, in Y-generation, nursing instructors had statistically significant lower organizational commitment than support staff (t = 2.078, p < .05); and 4) work values was positively statistically significant correlated with organizational commitment in both groups (r = .709, p < .001 and r = .791, p < .001, respectively).

This research suggested that the administrators should use various strategies to promote organizational commitment among nursing instructors and support staff especially in Y-generation nursing instructors.
