บทคัดย่อ

Introduction: Teenage pregnancy means pregnancy in women under the age of 20. Teenage pregnancy is common public health problems, either in developed (e.g., United States) or developing countries (e.g.,Thailand). It has been considered as a high-risk situation that increased adverse obstetric and perinatal outcomes when compare with normal age pregnancy (20-25 years). This may be due to biological immaturity and poor socioeconomic environment.

Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the incidence of teenage pregnancy at Somdejprasangkharach 17th hospital and compare obstetric and neonatal complications of teenage mothers with adult mothers.

Materials and methods: This is a retrospective study conducted at the department of obstetric and gynecology Somdejprasangkharach 17th hospital, Thailand. The study group consisted of women aged less than 20 years who gave birth at Somdejprasangkharach 17th hospital from 1 October 2008 to 30 September 2010. The control group consisted of women aged 20-25 years who gave birth during the same period. Demographic, obstetric and neonatal complications information were collected and compared between study and control groups.

Results: The incidence of teenage pregnancy in women aged less than 20 years who gave birth at Somdejprasangkharach 17 th hospital was 1,562 (29.72%) and mean age was 17.08 years. The study group had a higher preterm delivery rate than the control group (22.41 % vs 7.42 %) and also in low birth weight (13.71% vs 8.57 %) and anemia (24.84% vs 15.59%). Other complications were found in study group higher than control group.

Conclusion: The incidence of teenage pregnancy was 29.09 %. The most common obstetric complication in the teenage pregnancy was anemia. Neonatal complication in this study was low birth weight.
