How to Apply Theory of Big Band Jazz Composition adapts to Use in Thai Popular Music: Case Study Music in Concert Psalm the Princess

Abstract

This study aims to find a way to apply the theory of big band jazz composition in order to adapt it in Thai music for woodwind instrument and brass instrument in big band jazz. In addition, how to create suitable arrangements for musicians with intermediate musical skills such as secondary school students? In case study of concert Psalm the princess played by TSU Big Band Jazz. The study including asking for opinions and suggestions about arrangement in music concert from musical arrangement experts who experienced in the Thai Big Band over thirty years by using depth interview method. The study indicated that 1) Can be adapt to use the Jazz harmony theory to arrange Thai popular music, taking into account the aesthetic experience of the audiences and keeping the important element of original song. 2) Element of the arrangement that is appropriate to the skill of the musician and the purpose of the concert. For example, secondary school students should avoid too many Soli and change it to unison and the long note background as a chord also can be use. On the other hand, songs using for competition or talent can be arrange into a complex song.
