Abstract

This descriptive research aimed at investigating the factors predicting the intention to drink alcohol in secondary school students. The subjects of the study were 658 Muttayomsuksa 1-3 students from secondary schools in a southern province of Thailand. The data collection instruments consisted of five instruments including the general data questionnaire, the attitude toward alcohol behavior questionnaire, the subjective norm questionnaire, the perceived behavioral control questionnaire, and the intention of alcohol consumption behavior questionnaire. The quality and content of the instruments were verified by 5 experts. The content validity index (CVI) was 0.75 - 1.001. The instruments passed the reliability test with 30 secondary school students. The Cronbach alpha coefficient was 0.74-0.97. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis.

The study results revealed that attitude towards alcohol behavior, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control could explain the variance of the intention of alcohol consumption behavior in the subjects by 38.8%. Factors predicting the intention to drink alcohol in secondary school students were the subjective norm and attitude toward alcohol behavior with statistical significance at 0.001. Thus, having one more score on the attitude toward alcohol behavior increased the students’ likelihood to intend to drink alcohol by 1.02 times. Also, having one less score on the subjective norm increased the students’ likelihood to intend to drink alcohol by 0.97 times. The results from this study provided important information to plan for the prevention to drink alcohol in secondary school students.
